Formerly a part of Washington D.C., Arlington County ceded to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1846. Located directly across the Potomac from the Capital of the United States, Arlington has an important past, as well as a relevant current position. Once the home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Arlington House was converted into Arlington National Cemetery as both a tribute to fallen American soldiers, and an insult to the military leader of the South in the Civil War. Now, Arlington is the location of Department of Defense, at the Pentagon, the Ronald Reagan National Airport, Fort Myer, the US Marine Corps War Memorial, the AirForce Memorial, as well as numerous government and private headquarters.
Despite being organized as a county, it is considered a Central City of the Washington Metropolitan Area. With an area of only 26 square miles, it is the smallest self-governing county in the United States. Despite its size, it is extremely progressive, being ranked as the most educated, and the most recession proof city in the Country. Arlington's unincorporated neighborhoods are centers of commercial industry. These include Ballston, Clearendon, Courthouse, Crystal City, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, and Shirlington.
The Arlington court system is separated into two divisions; General District and Circuit Courts. The General District Court can consider cases up to $15,000. These cases are decided by a judge and can be completed in less than four months from the initial filing date. In larger cases, the Circuit Court is the proper venue. These cases take up to one year to complete and are generally heard before a jury. Although Arlington is one of the wealthiest Counties in the Country, it is also extremely diverse. In 2008 it was estimated that 28% of Arlington's residents were foreign-born. Because of the amount of wealth and education of the Arlington population, the juries have been considered conservative in personal injury cases, although the increased level of diversity has seemed to allow for a more open minded jury pool. This generalization is not always accurate, however, and is dependent on the type and severity of the accident and the resulting injuries. While juries are typically conservative when it comes to smaller accidents with only physical therapy or chiropractic care they can also be extremely generous in cases where there has been a significant accident and an objective injury.
Our Arlington County Accident Lawyers try cases in both the Arlington General District and Circuit Courts on a regular basis. We are familiar with the defense attorneys that work for the insurance companies, as well as the tendencies of the judges. Before we file a case, we do an analysis as to what is the best court to file in for each individual case. If you were involved in an automobile accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, and/or bus accident, you should speak with one of our Alington County personal injury attorneys.
